Hōtoku-ki was written by Kinjiro's disciple Tomita Takayoshi after his death.

According to its preface.

"Own achievements and hardships etc、our teacher was not said anything about it to us.

I therefore wrote the outline of his life with relying on hearsay.

I can not guarantee that there is no error in this content."

"It is not clear about when its project was carried out、it's also not uncommon.

I want to correct it waiting for the research of a later date."

Early in 1818、Kinjiro took on fiscal consolidation of Hattori family.　

In the same year、Ōkubo Tadazane、the lord of the Odawara Domain, was appointed to the position of Rōjū (member of shogun's council of elders) of the Tokugawa Shogunate.

And late of it year、Kinjiro was praised by him.

(Not only him.)

"He has very efforts for farming.

He is person to be a good model for others."

At that time、it was written so about Kinjiro on the lord's note.

This is not an assessment of Kinjiro's financial capabilities、but had been recognized from the lord already.　

Just maybe there might was Hattori's strong recommendation there.

"Discovery of human resources from all strata."　

The deadlocked state of territory management、probably samurai class had most understood about it than other class.

The following way of thinking may be a little unreasonable、but perhaps Tadazane was originally interested in Kinjiro.

He would have heard of Kinjiro's reputation.

1812‐1815.

This period may have been a test period for Kinjiro's abilities.

"I want Kinjiro to participate in the administration of the Odawara domain."

Tadazane of Odawara lord talked so to his vassals.

"Even if Kinjiro is indeed a wise man、if the people do not consent to his participation in the administration of the domain、it will surely become a source of disaster for the Odawara clan.

We should consider it the most、please give careful consideration. ”

Result he received a tremendous opposition from his vassals.

"Even if limited to range of the samurai's society、differences in social status strictly exist.

High status vassals treat low status vassals like their own manservants.

High status vassal、even if he is stupid、people respected him by his status.

Low status vassal、even if he is wise、people despised him by his status.

It may be the fate of the peaceful time.

This is the situation even in the samurai society alone.

Of course、the peasant class is out of the question for them."

Tomita、the author of Hōtoku-ki、wrote so.

By the way、Tomita was Sōma samurai.

He may had a harsh view to samurai class as a person who the same samurai class(as duty of class in charge of administration).

※Naturally、as also his own experience.

Kinjiro was first recognized by the Hattori family.

Hattori was the chief retainer of the Odawara clan、and they had a fief of the maximum in Odawara vassals.

And of course Tomita is samurai.

Back to Hōtoku-ki.　

Faced with the bitter opposition of his vassals、Tadazane thought.

"Demonstration and publicity of his competence to the public、it will be essential for his appointment.

First I give different job to Kinjiro.

If he makes a remarkable achievement there、it is possible that he will join the administration of the Odawara domain."

Entrusting the restoration of the Utsu family finances to Kinjiro、this plan seems to have emerged in this way.

※Of course、it depends on the case、and of course testing will be necessary、but speaking without fear of misunderstanding、it would be better if there were no such "resistors" in society.
