日本の小説家。陸軍少尉、禅僧、新聞記者、郵便局長という経歴も持つ。
三大奇書の一つ『ドグラ・マグラ』をはじめ、田舎の風土を醸したホラー、怪奇幻想の色濃い作風で名高い。
詩や短歌に長け『白髪小僧』中の神話、『猟奇歌』などに代表される。
絵もよくし、初期には『九州日報』で童話や今でいう一コマ漫画を描いた。

"逞しいスティーヴ・フォレストが、タフで皮肉屋なガンマン、ジェームズ・デヴリンを的確に毅然とした演技で演じている。デブリンは、悪の土地王ルー・ハレック（憎悪に満ちたキャメロン・ミッチェル）に振り回される気骨のある未亡人、キャリー・ゴールト（魅力的で気骨のあるシャロン・アッカー）を助ける。監督のマイケル・キャフィーは、ケン・トレヴィーの興味深い脚本を最大限に活かしている。堅実なキャストから見事な演技を引き出し、小気味よいテンポと説得力のあるミステリアスなムードを終始維持し、スリリングな銃撃戦をそれなりのセンスと技術で演出する（デブリンとハレックの最後の対決は特に緊迫感がありエキサイティングだ）。キース・C・スミスの洗練された撮影は、映画にもっともらしく埃っぽく硬質な表情を与え、リチャード・マーコウィッツの余裕のある不気味で刺激的なスコアも同様にツボを押さえている。ディーン・ジャガーが親切な弁護士役で、ウィル・ギアが気違いじみた乱暴者の老牧場主役で、ラファエル・カンポスが純朴な若い神父役で、ハンク・ワーデンがおしゃべりで気さくな老人役で、それぞれいい脇役で登場する。運命と贖罪に関するオフビートで興味をそそる寓話である『絞首刑の男』は、一見の価値がある。IMDb.comのWoodyandersの記事。
