デヴィッド・ボウイ（David Bowie）の写真の中でも最も印象的なものを数多く撮影した写真家・鋤田正義。ボウイのファンサイトDavid Bowie Newsは、鋤田正義にロング・インタビュー。ボウイとの出会い、さまざまなフォトセッションの思い出、来日時の様子など逸話を語っています。

Ｑ：ボウイと初めて会ったのは1972年のロンドンでしたね。彼のポスターを見て衝撃を受け、それをきっかけに彼を撮影しようと決めたと言われています。初めて会ったときのボウイの印象や、最初のセッションでの進め方などを詳しく教えてください。

「そうですね、1972年にT・レックスの撮影でロンドンを訪れたとき、偶然、路上でボウイのポスターを見かけました。その時、彼に興味を持った私は、彼のマネージメントに連絡を取り、フォトセッションをお願いしました。

彼の第一印象は“クールな人”でした。撮影中はワインを飲みながらとてもリラックスしていました」

Ｑ：ボウイの伝説的なコンサート（レインボー・シアター）にも参加されていましたね。当時のボウイのライヴをご覧になって、どのような印象を持ちましたか？

「リンゼイ・ケンプと一緒にステージ上でパントマイムをしていたのには驚きました。ロックコンサートの撮影は、ほとんど初めての経験でした」

Ｑ：次のコラボレーションは、1973年にニューヨークで行われましたね。その頃のボウイは、わずかな期間で完全に変身していました。山本寛斎の衣装で行った素晴らしいセッションについて教えてください。

「私の友人である日本人スタイリストのヤッコが、1年前にロンドンで行われた山本寛斎のファッションショーをサポートしていたこともあり、山本寛斎の衣装をボウイに着せることを提案しました。衣装はほとんどが女性用でしたが、ボウイにはぴったりでした。当時、RCA（ボウイのレコード会社）がボウイを大々的に宣伝していたので、RCAの写真スタジオを使うことができました。このセッションでは、彼の象徴的な写真を撮ることができました」

Ｑ：その後、ボウイが初めて日本で公演する様子を撮影しましたね。この頃になると、ショーはより激しくなり、衣装もより奇抜なものになっていました。当時の日本の観客やツアーについて、どのような思い出がありますか？

「彼は船でやってきて、多くのファンが彼が到着した横浜港まで見に行きました。彼は船の上からファンに向かって手を振っていました。ボウイが日本のファンのためにコンサートをするのは初めてのことでしたので、観客がとても熱狂的だったのを覚えています」

Ｑ：1977年には、プレスやプロモーションのために来日したボウイを再び撮影しましたね。このとき、ボウイの最も象徴的なイメージのひとつが生まれました。アルバム『Heroes』のジャケットです。これはあくまでもプロモーションのための撮影であり、アルバムジャケットを作るつもりはなかったと聞いています。しかし、ボウイはその中の1枚をとても気に入り、使ってもいいかと尋ねてきたそうですね。この伝説的なセッションについてお聞かせください。

「ボウイは、イギー・ポップのアルバム『The Idiot』のプロモーションのために、イギー・ポップとともに来日しました。今回は、彼がアルバムをプロデュースしたからです。ツアーではないので、スケジュールがあまりタイトではないと聞いていたので、彼とイギーにフォトセッションをお願いしました。彼は、そのためにヤッコに革ジャンを用意してほしいとリクエストしただけでした。セッションは、ボウイとイギーでそれぞれ1時間ずつ行われ、彼らはとてもリラックスした様子でした。

セッションの後、私はその中からベストなものを選んでプリントし、彼に送りました。数日後、彼はニューアルバム『Heroes』のジャケットにぜひ使いたいと言ってきました。とても光栄に思いましたし、嬉しかったです」

「ボウイは当時、日本のお酒のCM撮影のために京都に来ていました。CM撮影の後、京都で撮影してほしいとの連絡がありました。断る理由はありませんでした。私は彼に、お寺や神社などのいわゆる日本的な場所ではなく、“ロコ的”な場所で撮影することを提案しました。ボウイは自分でレンタカーを運転して街中を走り回り、まるで私が彼をタクシーの運転手として使っているかのようでした。私の意図は間違っていなかったと今でも思っています。この時の写真は、とても素敵で面白いものばかりです」

Ｑ：この来日では、スタジオで作業をする時間もありましたね。セッションでは、コンセプトを持った非常に面白い写真が生まれました。“ビジネスマンとしてのボウイ”では、数字の足りない時計をバックにポーズをとっています。この興味深いセッションについてお聞かせください。

「京都の後、ボウイに日本を離れる前に東京でもう一度セッションをしてほしいと頼みました。私はスタイルを提案し、彼はビジネスマンと時計のアイデアを提案しました。

時計の盤面には1から10までしか書かれていませんが、これはビジネスマンが忙しすぎて12の時間を持てないことを意味しています」

「映画『戦場のメリークリスマス』の後、彼がひげを生やしていたのを知っていたので、“ひげのボウイ”を撮るためだけに、彼に撮影を依頼し、ニューヨークを訪れました。新しいボウイに変身していると思いました」

Ｑ：その後、再びボウイと仕事をすることになりますが、その時のボウイはバンドの一員でした。あなたが撮影したのは、後にティン・マシーンの1stアルバムのジャケットになるもので、バンドメンバーの位置を変えてさまざまな構成で表現されています。この新しいフォーマットでのボウイの撮影はどのようなものでしたか？

「ヒゲのセッションでボウイを訪ねたとき、1stアルバムのジャケット用に新しいバンド、ティン・マシーンの写真を撮ってほしいと頼まれました。ボウイだけでなく、他のメンバーの最高の瞬間を撮らなければならないので、バンドの撮影は私にとってチャレンジングなものでした。それと同時に、メンバーが思いがけない動きをするのが面白かったですね」

Ｑ：その後、1992年のティン・マシーンの第2期にも素晴らしい写真を撮っていますね。

「先に述べたように、バンドの撮影は楽しかったです。当時のボウイはとても痩せていて、かなり驚きました。眼鏡をかけたボウイのイメージが気に入って、（自身の写真集）『Ki』の表紙に選びました」

Ｑ：次に、1996年に行われたアウトサイド・ツアーでのライヴを撮影しましたね。このショットでは、ボウイが非常にドラマチックなポーズをとっていますね。魅惑的な仕上がりになっています。同じように、1978年にボウイが『Heroes』のポーズをとっているところを撮影した写真も印象的です。これらの写真は、ライヴ中の絶妙なタイミングで、通常のライヴ写真とは一線を画す素晴らしいショットを撮影する才能を示しています。なぜ、コンサートでここまでの写真が撮れるのでしょうか？運が良かったのでしょうか？

「全ては私の思いつきです。私は英語が全くわからないので、コンサート中に歌詞が耳に入ってくることはありません。写真を撮るために集中したことが功を奏したのだと思います。それに、ボウイのライヴを撮影する機会は何度もあったので、次に何が起こるかを予測して、次のシャッターチャンスに備えることができました」

Ｑ：2009年にニューヨークのボウイのオフィスで行ったセッションについて教えてください。このときの写真が『Speed of Life』に1枚だけ収録されています。他の写真も撮られていますか？　また、今後、それらを公開する予定はありますか？

「ブルックリン美術館で開催されたロック写真展に参加するためにニューヨークを訪れました（私の写真も展示されていました）。その時に別のセッションをお願いしました。実現しましたが、残念ながら彼は忙しくて十分な時間が取れませんでした。彼が写真に写っている赤いテーブルを気に入ってくれたのを覚えています。

このセッションからいくつかの写真がありますが、やはり時間が足りなくてたくさんは撮れませんでした。今後、他の写真を公開するかどうかはわかりません」

Ｑ：ボウイの本について。1992年に出版された『Ki, Spiritual Force』は、今ではコレクターズアイテムとなっていて、簡単には手に入りません。この本はどのような経緯で作られたのですか？

「どうやって始まったのか覚えていないのですが、TOKYO FM出版（この本の出版社）が声をかけてくれたのでしょうか。

最初のタイトル案は“Photo Session”だったのですが、“Ki（気）”という日本の哲学的用語（それは 「スピリット」 のような意味です）に変更しました。ボウイは日本の文化にとても興味を持っていたので、この言葉が気に入ったのだと思います」

Ｑ：その数年後、信じられないような野心的なプロジェクトが実現しました。『Speed of Life』いう素晴らしい本です。ボウイに関するGenesis Publicationsの書籍の中で、『Speed of Life』が最も美しく、特別なものであることは間違いありません。ボウイと協力してこの本を作成し、写真を選ぶためにすべてのセッションを行ったのはどんな感じでしたか?

「このプロジェクトは出版されるまでに7年かかりました。私とGenesis Publicationsがプロジェクトを始め、ボウイは出版社からこの本のことを知らされて参加しました。彼はかなり興味を持ってくれて、このためにいくつかのエッセイを書いてくれました（サインにも応じてくれました）。

この本が発売された後、ジミー・ペイジが『Speed of Life』のような本を作りたいと言っていると聞きました。私はこの本を誇りに思っています」

「ボウイからは事前に何も知らされていなかったので、初めて見たときはとても驚きました。このことについて、彼はインタビューを受けませんでした。当時、ブラジルやロシアなど世界中の多くのメディアから、アルバム・ジャケットについて聞かれました。

何も考えていなかったので、少し戸惑いました。イメージを“より新しくする”という、面白いコンセプトですね。今、このことを考えると、私の『Heroes』の写真が、2つの異なるアルバムに使われた唯一の写真になり得ることを光栄に思い、誇りに思っています」

Ｑ：最後に、展覧会や書籍、プロジェクトなど、今後の活動について教えてください。

「現在、スペインのバリャドリッドで開催されている『Rock the Photo』に参加しました。

今年、新型コロナウイルスによって強制的に中止された京都での展覧会を再開しようと思っています。タイトルは「Bowie x Kyoto x Sukita」で、1980年に京都で撮影したボウイの写真をベースに、私が新たに撮影した京都の写真を加えたものになる予定です。おそらく2022年6月にオープンする予定です。

また、私の出身地である福岡でも大きな展覧会が計画されており、2023年に開催されることを期待しています」
