◆Graffiti Bridge is the twelfth studio album by American recording artist Prince and is the soundtrack album to the 1990 film of the same name. It was released on August 20, 1990, by Paisley Park Records and Warner Bros. Records.
The album was much better received in sales than the film. It reached number 6 in the United States and was his third consecutive chart-topper (following Lovesexy and Batman) on the UK Albums Chart. Nearly every song on the record was written by Prince despite the handful of artists performing, including Tevin Campbell, Mavis Staples, and the Time. The album produced the hit singles "Thieves in the Temple" and "New Power Generation", an anthem in two parts celebrating Prince's newly created backing band, the New Power Generation. "Can't Stop This Feeling I Got" was released in the Philippines only. The band would get its first official outing on Prince's next album, Diamonds and Pearls.
Evolution of the album
The concept for the album and film began as early as mid-1987, but experienced delays for various reasons. The title track was originally recorded during this period, hence the liner notes listing Sheila E. and Boni Boyer as performers on the track. In fact, nearly the entire album is composed of previously recorded sessions that were updated for this release.
"Tick, Tick, Bang" was originally from 1981 during the sessions for the Controversy album. Written by Prince, it was originally a more punk rock song with a bass synthesizer; the update of the song includes an uncredited drum sample from Jimi Hendrix's "Little Miss Lover". "Can't Stop This Feeling I Got" was from 1982, but later updated in mid-1986 during sessions for aborted album Dream Factory, before further updating. "We Can Funk" was first recorded in 1983, originally titled "We Can Fuck", before Prince re-recorded the song in 1986 with the Revolution (under the title "We Can Funk"), before further updating to 1983 version took place. A melody similar to that of "Purple Rain" can be heard during the bridge of "Can't Stop This Feeling I Got". The three tracks were drastically updated in 1989 for release on Graffiti Bridge.
"The Question of U" was recorded in 1985 during sessions for Parade with little updating added to the original version. "Joy in Repetition" was first included on the Crystal Ball unreleased album in late 1986, and the same recording was used for this album (the track was not updated further for release, unlike the other "old" songs). Prince also kept the original segue of party noise at the start of the song (this time segueing from "We Can Funk" on this album instead of "The Ball" when "Joy In Repetition" was placed on Crystal Ball in 1986) which is also heard at the end of "Eye No", leading into "Alphabet St." on Lovesexy. The title track (from 1987) was updated for the album as well as "Elephants & Flowers" (from the 1988 unreleased Rave Unto the Joy Fantastic album) and "The Latest Fashion" (later given to the Time for "Corporate World" album). "Melody Cool" and "Still Would Stand All Time" were intended for Rave Unto the Joy Fantastic album and were later performed in some Lovesexy aftershows. "Still Would Stand All Time" was later considered for Batman, but was replaced by "Scandalous". The four tracks featuring the Time were originally going to be on their unreleased Corporate World album, recorded in 1989, though "The Latest Fashion" reuses music from "My Summertime Thang" from their album Pandemonium. "New Power Generation" was originally recorded in 1982 as "Bold Generation".
The only truly "new" compositions recorded for the album were "Round and Round" and "Thieves in the Temple". The latter song was the final track recorded for the album, recorded in early 1990. The B-side "Get Off" would soon be incorporated into Gett Off the following year.
Critical reception
Graffiti Bridge received positive reviews from contemporary critics, who praised Prince's songwriting and the variety of the music while deeming it an improvement over 1988's Lovesexy. Time magazine hailed the record as a "groovable feast", while Q claimed it was "practically impossible to choose anything that doesn't deserve to be there. How long is it since that can honestly be said about a Prince album?" In Entertainment Weekly, Greg Sandow said the album was likely a "masterpiece" that found Prince rediscovering his ability to cover different styles effortlessly. Rolling Stone reviewer Paul Evans credited him for lending a "sharper focus", "harder groove", and emphasis on funk and rock rather than "the feckless genre dabbling" of albums such as Lovesexy and Around the World in a Day (1985). Evans also believed Prince's catchy compositions helped make the "omnivorous mysticism" of his lyrics "newly convincing — convincing, but still startling, sensual and freeing". Greg Kot, the Chicago Tribune's chief music critic, called the album "a sprawling, wildly diffuse statement on love, sin, sex and salvation that ranks with his best work", as well as "perhaps his most complex and, dare we say, mature exploration" of those themes.
In The New York Times, Jon Pareles believed Graffiti Bridge would perhaps give Prince a success on both commercial and artistic terms, although he lamented some of the lyrics: "Verbally, he's no deep thinker; when he's not singing about sex, his messages tend to be benevolent and banal." Robert Christgau was less impressed in his consumer guide for The Village Voice. He applauded the guest artists, particularly the Time, and some of Prince's own half of songs, but said most of them were "overly subtle if not rehashed or just weak: title track, generational anthem, and lead single all reprise familiar themes, and the ballads fall short of the exquisite vocalese that can make his slow ones sing." At the end of 1990, Graffiti Bridge was voted the tenth best album of the year in the Pazz & Jop, a nationwide poll of American critics, published by The Village Voice.
In a retrospective review for AllMusic, Stephen Thomas Erlewine called Graffiti Bridge an "often very good" album whose best songs were those performed by Prince, with the exception of the Time's "Release It" and Tevin Campbell's "Round and Round". Michaelangelo Matos was more critical in The Rolling Stone Album Guide (2004), finding the record "interesting primarily for its guest stars" and "for the fact that it now sounds as dated as the new jack swing it apes".

◆Come is the fifteenth studio album by American recording artist Prince. It was released on August 16, 1994, by Warner Bros. Records. At the time of its release, Prince was in a public dispute with Warner Bros. A lack of promotion from the label and Prince himself resulted in Come under-performing on American record charts, stalling at No. 15, and becoming his first album since Controversy (1981) to not yield any top 10 singles in the US. However, it was more successful overseas, reaching the top 10 across Europe and topping the UK Albums Chart.
The album would be Prince's final Warner Bros. album under his name. For the remainder of his contract with the company, his name would be represented by the unpronounceable "Love Symbol", and he would be referred to in the media as "The Artist Formerly Known as Prince".
Evolution of the album
Most of the songs from the Come album were recorded in early 1993 during a highly prolific time for Prince. An early collection of single word-titled tracks included: "Come", "Endorphinmachine", "Space", "Pheromone", "Loose!", "Papa", "Dark", and "Poem". It was unknown at this time if these tracks were indeed intended for an album. In late May 1993, Prince's then-band member, Mayte Garcia, sent a letter to a Prince fanzine listing the above tracks, plus a few others: "Interactive", "Peach", "Pope", "Solo", and "Race". Most of these songs were newly written, except "Peach" (written in 1992), and "Race" (written in 1991 during the Love Symbol Album sessions—it uses a scratching sound effect similar to Love Symbol Album's "The Continental").
After Prince's name change to an unpronounceable symbol, he intended to release new songs under that moniker in formats other than albums. He would fulfill his contract to Warner Bros. by delivering unreleased material from his music vault. Prince conceived an "interactive musical experience" called Glam Slam Ulysses—a musical loosely based on Homer's Odyssey. Thirteen tracks were selected and premiered as the first new material from Prince. These songs and many others would travel back and forth between different concepts of albums in a relatively short frame of time. The Dawn was a triple-album concept. The track listing is unknown, but the idea was scrapped for single album releases. Some of these ended up on Come, and some on a new album called The Gold Experience. There was also an idea floating around for The Beautiful Experience that took on various forms before its final release as a maxi single.
On March 6, 1994, Prince submitted a tape of eight songs to Dutch radio stations which included the song "Pheromone". Five days later, he submitted the first version of the Come album to Warner Bros. The album consisted of: "Poem", "Interactive", "Endorphinemachine", "Space", "Pheromone", "Loose!", "Papa", "Race", "Dark", "Solo", and "Strays of the World". This version of the album is exactly 45 minutes in length, has been leaked, and is known as the Come Test Pressing. The title track was absent. Warner Bros. rejected this version, and asked for the title track along with some other new material, such as the recent hit "The Most Beautiful Girl in the World". Prince went back into the studio and tooled with the title track, creating an 11-minute horn-boosted sexual romp. He added it to the album and resubmitted it to Warner Bros., and they agreed to it.
Prince changed the album once again, removing the more rock-oriented tracks "Interactive", "Endorphinemachine", and "Strays of the World". He broke up "Poem" into segues throughout the album, with the remainder retitled as "Orgasm", and also included the newly written track "Letitgo". This final version was submitted to Warner Bros. on the same day as a configuration of The Gold Experience. Prince wanted them to release both albums simultaneously, so the Prince material would compete with the one released under the symbolic moniker in the charts (with the latter having more commercial material). Warner Bros. accepted both albums, but refused to release them both at the same time fearing the market would have too much Prince material in stock.
The guitar sound on "Orgasm" is a sample of a feedback guitar solo from a previous Prince track, "Private Joy" from his 1981 album Controversy. The moaning on "Orgasm" is that of Vanity, recorded in 1983 for the unreleased track "Vibrator". In the liner notes, Vanity is credited as "she knows".
Upon release, Come received little support from Prince, who derided the album as "old material", despite the fact that many of the tracks had been recorded during the same sessions that produced The Gold Experience. Since Prince placed the more up-tempo and commercial material from these sessions on The Gold Experience, the overall tone of Come is somewhat dark and experimental in nature. Despite Prince's apparent marketing neglect, Come performed moderately well, reaching number 15 in the United States, going gold and receiving heavy R&B airplay with the single "Letitgo". In the United Kingdom, the album was a huge hit, debuting at number 1. Prince also released two maxi singles in support of the album.
In 1993, a funkier instrumental version of the song "Pheromone" was used as the theme music for the BET music video program, Video LP.
The album cover proclaims "Prince: 1958–1993", indicating that Prince had "died" in 1993, and was reborn under his Love Symbol alias. The church depicted in the background of the record's cover is the Sagrada Família in Barcelona. The outtakes from the photoshoot for the cover of the album were released a year before in The Sacrifice of Victor, Prince's first book.

『おジャ魔女どれみ』シリーズの劇場版であり、制作スタッフも当時のメンバーの多くが集まった。一方で本作のストーリーは子供の頃に『おジャ魔女どれみ』シリーズを見ていた女性3人を主人公に据え、その3人が一緒に旅に出て大人になって見失ってしまった大切なものを探すというもので、アニメ版の主人公キャラクターであるどれみ達を主人公としなかったことが大きな特徴である。第75回毎日映画コンクールアニメーション映画賞を受賞した作品で、興行収入は3億円。
本作は、2021年12月31日にNHK Eテレにて放映された。
あらすじ
愛知に住む教師を目指す、22歳の大学生・長瀬ソラ。東京に住む一流貿易商社で働く、帰国子女で語学堪能な27歳の吉月ミレ。広島に住む絵画修復士になるためバイトに励む、20歳のフリーター川谷レイカ。3人はそれぞれ、魔法のようには思い通りにいかない現実と向き合い過ごしていた。年齢も境遇も違う3人の共通点は、幼少期に『おジャ魔女どれみ』を見ていたということ。「MAHO堂」のモデルと言われている鎌倉の洋館で偶然出会った3人は、共通しておジャ魔女ファンであることを知り、さらにそれぞれが「魔法玉」[注釈 5/アニメシリーズにおいて、どれみ達魔女見習いが魔法を使うために消費するアイテムのこと。本作の作中では、あくまでもおジャ魔女どれみのキャラクターグッズとして登場しており、3人がファンとして所有し持ち歩いていた。]を持っていることを知り意気投合、聖地巡礼として、どれみゆかりの地である飛騨高山へ3人で旅行に行くことになる。
飛騨高山への旅行中、レイカは父と幼い頃に生き別れになったことをソラとミレに語る。ミレは3人が持っている魔法玉にレイカが父と再会できるよう願うことを提案、実行すると思いがけずレイカは父と病院で対面することになる。しかし久々に再会した父はレイカとは向き合わず、父の対応にショックを受けたレイカはミレと口論になり、実家のある尾道に帰ってしまう。その後ミレはソラからも「正論だからといって言ってはいけないこともある」と諭され、ソラの家で『おジャ魔女どれみ』でどれみとはづきが喧嘩をして仲直りをする回[注釈 6/おジャ魔女どれみ♯19話「どれみとはづきの大げんか」のこと。魔女の赤ちゃんであるハナちゃんのお世話の仕方をめぐり喧嘩をしたどれみとはづきはなかなか仲直りできなかったが、あいこたちの魔法によって幼少期に喧嘩をして仲直りしたときのことを思い出し、互いに素直に謝って仲直りを果たす。]を観てすぐに尾道へ向かい、レイカに謝る。レイカと無事に関係を戻したミレは、レイカの夢を叶えるため上京するように誘い、レイカはミレと同居することになる。ミレもまた上司と関係が悪化していた会社を辞めることを決断し、ソラも教師になるための勉強を改めて再開する。
夏になりソラの試験が落ち着いたため、3人はどれみたちが修学旅行で行った奈良・京都への旅行へ行くことにする。この旅行の道中で3人は、同じく『おジャ魔女どれみ』シリーズのファンである青年大宮と出会い、4人は旅路をともにする。その中でソラは大宮へ好意を寄せるようになり、ついに告白するが、大宮が告白を断りソラは失恋する。その夜3人は京都の公園で『おジャ魔女どれみ』への想いや自分たちのやりたいことを語り合う。それを通じて3人は「自分達の間に生まれた絆はみなどれみのおかげだ」と感じ、3人は改めて魔法玉を手にして「どれみに会いたい」と願うが、実現することはない。しかし、思い返せばどれみは魔法を使っていないのに、まるで魔法を使ったかのような事態を巻き起こすこともしばしばあり、これはどれみ自身が持っていた魔法なのではないかと3人は語り合う。そして3人は、おジャ魔女を見て魔法を信じていた幼い頃の自分を思い返しながら、どれみだけでなく誰の心にも魔法があり夢を叶えることができるのだということに気づく。
3か月後、ミレはMAHO堂のモデルとなった洋館を改装し3人の夢を実現できるカフェを開く。

漫画
1972年2月号から1979年3月号まで『月刊少年ジャンプ』（別冊少年ジャンプ）（集英社）に連載された。当初は、『別冊少年ジャンプ』に『がんばらなくっちゃ』というタイトルで読み切り作品として発表され、翌号から『キャプテン』とタイトルを改めて新連載された。
それまで主流だった『魔球などの非現実的な技を活用する熱血野球漫画』と違い、『欠点を持ち合わせた等身大のキャラクターが、仲間と一緒に努力しながら（監督は不在）成長していく過程』を描いて読者に受け入れさせ、スポーツ漫画としての新たなスタイルを築き上げた。また、当初の主人公であった谷口が卒業したのちも、代々のキャプテンを主人公にすることで連載を継続した点も特徴的である。
1973年からは同社の『週刊少年ジャンプ』にも、高校進学後の谷口を中心に描いたスピンオフ作品『プレイボール』（1978年まで連載）が並行連載された。
1977年、『少年ジャンプ』系作品としては史上初めて第22回（昭和51年度）小学館漫画賞を受賞した。本作の累計発行部数は1900万部を記録しており、本作とスピンオフ作品『プレイボール』を合算すると3200万部となる。
2022年に連載50周年を迎えたことを記念し、3月に東京都の神保町にある集英社神保町3丁目ビル1階集英社ギャラリーにて、歴代墨谷二中キャプテンの4人のパネルなどの展示が行われた。
キャプテン2
『グランドジャンプむちゃ』2019年5月号よりコージィ城倉の作画による『キャプテン2』が連載開始。同作者による『プレイボール2』同様、ちばあきお原案の続編として絵柄を踏襲し、本作品の最終回からの続きを描いている。2021年5月号まで掲載された後は『グランドジャンプ』に移籍し、2021年12号より連載中。時代背景は連載終了当時のものをそのまま引き継いでるため谷口の家でオリンピックの時に買った白黒テレビやベータービデオが出たり、「サウスポー」をやっていたり、近藤が「ヤングマン」を口ずさんだりと時代背景や高校野球のルールも当時のものを引き継いでいる。
アニメ
1980年4月にテレビスペシャルとして単発アニメ化されたのを皮切りに、1983年までにアニメ映画（以下、アニメ劇場版）・連続テレビアニメ（以下、テレビシリーズ）が随時上映・放送された。詳細はアニメの節を参照。

野球選手への影響
後にプロ野球選手となる人が愛読していた例も多く、イチローがオリックス・ブルーウェーブ入団の際にコミックスの全巻を寮に持ち込んだことが田口壮から語られており（ただし、この時持ち込んだのは原作のコミックス全巻ではなく、テレビシリーズのVHSビデオ全巻であったとのちにイチロー本人が語っている）、元阪神タイガースの新庄剛志などは少年時代に本作品のファンであったと雑誌取材で語っている[要出典]。また、アニマックスにてテレビシリーズが放送された際、当時東北楽天ゴールデンイーグルスに所属していた田中将大が本作品に関するインタビューに答えた。
あらすじ
中学2年時に野球の名門・青葉学院中学校から墨谷第二中学校（墨谷二中）に転校してきた主人公・谷口タカオは、野球部へ入部するためにグラウンドを訪れ、練習に参加しようと青葉時代のユニフォームに着替えた。そのユニフォームに気付いた野球部員は、勝手に谷口を名門青葉のレギュラー選手だったと思いこんでしまう。しかし実際は、谷口は2軍の補欠でレギュラーにはほど遠い選手だった。そのことを気が弱くて言い出せない谷口は一度は諦めかけるが、大工を営む父の叱咤激励を受けて周囲の期待に応えるべく陰ですさまじい努力を続ける。やがてそれらを見抜いていた先代キャプテンに見込まれてキャプテンに選ばれるまでになり、試行錯誤しながらチームを引っ張っていく。
谷口の卒業以降も連載は続き、新キャプテンを主人公として墨谷二中野球部が強豪へと成長する様子を描いていった。
テレビシリーズにおいて、地区大会の決勝戦で最後に試合を決めるのは必ず次期キャプテンとなる人物である。
『2』では近藤キャプテンによる夏の大会を描いたのち、近藤が墨谷高校に進学して谷口が野球部監督を務めるという流れで、『プレイボール2』とストーリーを集約している。
その他
「強敵! 金成中」では、別冊ジャンプ連載時には金成中マネージャーが事故でバットが頭に当たり気絶しているが、コミック発売時には4ページ分描きなおしている（不適切な描写の除去）。
アニメ
1980年4月2日（水曜日）に、19:30 - 20:54（JST）の時間帯において、テレビスペシャルとして単発で初めてアニメ化された。ニールセン調べで17.5%の好視聴率を獲得し、放送した日本テレビへは反響の手紙が殺到。これを受けて、同年8月20日に再試合を描いた新作場面30分を追加して21:00 - 22:56（水曜ロードショー）の2時間枠で再放送が行なわれ、前回を上回る視聴率20.7%を得た。
1981年の夏休みには劇場アニメ映画が公開され、さらにテレビシリーズ化が決定した。テレビシリーズは1983年1月10日から7月4日まで、日本テレビ系列で毎週月曜19:00 - 19:30（JST）に全26話が放送された。ストーリーは谷口の墨谷二中野球部への入部から、イガラシキャプテン期の夏の地区大会決勝戦で江田川中と対戦するまでが描かれており、またアニメ制作に当たっては、監督の出崎哲が率いるアニメ制作会社マジックバスが大きな役割を果たした。2021年4月25日より、tvkにおいても毎週日曜20:27 - 20:55（JST）にて、テレビシリーズの再放送が実施されている。
