◆Big Brother & the Holding Company is the debut album of Big Brother and the Holding Company, with Janis Joplin, their main singer. Recorded during three days in December 1966 for Mainstream Records, it was released in the summer of 1967, shortly after the band's major success at the Monterey Pop Festival. Columbia took over the band's contract and re-released the album, adding two extra tracks, and putting Joplin's name on the cover. Several tracks on the album were released as singles, the most successful being "Down on Me" on its second release, in 1968.
Recording
The band signed to Bob Shad's local record label Mainstream Records while stranded in Chicago after a promoter ran out of money when their concerts did not attract the expected attendance. Initial recordings took place in Chicago in September 1966, but these were not satisfactory, and the band returned to San Francisco. The band recorded the tracks "Blindman" and "All Is Loneliness" in Los Angeles, and these were released by Mainstream as a single, which did not sell well. After playing at a "happening" at Stanford in early December 1966, the band traveled to Los Angeles to record 10 tracks between 12 and 14 December 1966, produced by Bob Shad.
Release and reception
The album was released by Mainstream Records in August 1967, shortly after the band's major success at the Monterey Pop Festival. Two tracks, "Coo Coo" and "The Last Time", were released separately as a single, while the tracks from the previous single, "Blindman" and "All Is Loneliness", were added to the remaining eight tracks. When Columbia took over the band's contract and re-released the album, they included "Coo Coo" and "The Last Time", and put "featuring Janis Joplin" on the cover. The album has been reissued in various formats several times since 1967.
The album was a minor success, peaking at number 60 and almost producing a Top 40 hit with the song "Down on Me". In a retrospective review for Allmusic, Joe Viglione feels the production by Bob Shad is weak, though the material and the performances are respectable.

◆Cheap Thrills is the second studio album by American rock band Big Brother and the Holding Company. It was their last album with Janis Joplin as lead singer before she started a solo career. For Cheap Thrills, the band and producer John Simon incorporated recordings of crowd noise to give the impression of a live album, for which it was subsequently mistaken by listeners. Only "Ball and Chain" was actually recorded in concert at Winterland Ballroom.
Cheap Thrills reached number one on the charts for eight nonconsecutive weeks in 1968.
In 2007, Cheap Thrills was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.
History
Big Brother obtained a considerable amount of attention after their 1967 performance at the Monterey Pop Festival and had released their debut album soon after. The followup, Cheap Thrills, was a great success, reaching number one on the charts for eight nonconsecutive weeks in 1968. Columbia Records offered the band a new recording contract, but it took months to get through since they were still signed to Mainstream Records. The album features three cover songs ("Summertime", "Piece of My Heart" and "Ball and Chain"). The album also features Bill Graham, who introduces the band at the beginning of "Combination of the Two". The album's overall raw sound effectively captures the band's energetic and lively concerts. The LP was released in both stereo and mono formats with the original monophonic pressing now a rare collector's item. The album had been considered for quadraphonic format in the early '70s and eventually in 2002, was released as a Multichannel Sony SACD. The original quadraphonic mix remains unreleased.
Artwork and title
The cover was drawn by underground cartoonist Robert Crumb after the band's original cover idea, a photo of the group naked in bed together, was vetoed by Columbia Records. Crumb had originally intended his art for the LP back cover, with a portrait of Janis Joplin to grace the front. But Joplin—an avid fan of underground comics, especially the work of Crumb—so loved the Cheap Thrills illustration that she demanded Columbia place it on the front cover. It is number nine on Rolling Stone's list of 100 greatest album covers. Crumb later authorized the sale of prints of the cover, some of which he signed before sale.
In an interview for the AIGA, Columbia Records art director John Berg told design professor Paul Nini, "[Janis] Joplin commissioned it, and she delivered Cheap Thrills to me personally in the office. There were no changes with R. Crumb. He refused to be paid, saying, 'I don't want Columbia's filthy lucre.'"
In at least one early edition, the words "HARRY KIRSHNER! (D. GETZ)" are faintly visible in the word balloon of the turbaned man, apparently referring to a track that was dropped from the final sequence. The words "ART: R. CRUMB" replace them.
Initially, the album was to be called Sex, Dope and Cheap Thrills, but the title was not received well by Columbia Records.
Release and reception
Cheap Thrills was released in the summer of 1968, one year after Big Brother's debut album, and reached number one on the Billboard charts in its eighth week in October. It kept the top spot for eight (nonconsecutive) weeks, while the single "Piece of My Heart" also became a huge hit. By the end of the year, it was the most successful album of 1968,[citation needed] having sold nearly a million copies. The success was short-lived, however, as Joplin left the group for a solo career in December 1968.[citation needed]
Outtakes originally to have appeared on the album have since been released on Janis Joplin compilations such as Farewell Song (in which Big Brother's original instruments were replaced with studio musicians from 1983, angering the band) and the Janis compilation box set featuring all original studio songs and live recordings. The 1999 re-release of Cheap Thrills features the outtakes "Flower in the Sun" and "Roadblock" as well as live performances of "Magic of Love" and "Catch Me Daddy" as bonus material. In 2018, Columbia released Sex, Dope & Cheap Thrills, an album of outtakes, etc., from the Cheap Thrills sessions.
Critical reception
In a contemporary review, Rolling Stone magazine's John Hardin panned Cheap Thrills as living up to its title and being merely satisfactory: "What this record is not is 1) a well-produced, good rock and roll recording; 2) Janis Joplin at her highest and most intense moments; and 3) better than the Mainstream record issued last year."
Robert Christgau was more enthusiastic in his column for Esquire and called it Big Brother's "first physically respectable effort", as it "not only gets Janis's voice down, it also does justice to her always-underrated and ever-improving musicians." He named it the third best album of 1968 in his ballot for Jazz & Pop magazine's critics poll.
In a retrospective review penned in the 2000s, AllMusic's William Ruhlmann hailed Cheap Thrills as Joplin's "greatest moment" and said it sounds like "a musical time capsule [today] and remains a showcase for one of rock's most distinctive singers."
Marc Weingarten of Entertainment Weekly called it the peak of blues-rock, while Paul Evans wrote in The Rolling Stone Album Guide (2004) that the record epitomizes acid rock "in all its messy, pseudo-psychedelic glory". Cheap Thrills was ranked number 338 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time, and later ranked number 372 in the 2020 edition. The magazine previously ranked it #50 on their Top 100 Albums of the Past 20 Years list in 1987. It is also listed in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die. On March 22, 2013, the album was deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" by the Library of Congress and thus it was preserved into the National Recording Registry for the 2012 register. The album was named the 163rd best album of the 1960s by Pitchfork.

In January 1972, the great Aretha Franklin performed for two days giving a gospel concert at the New Temple Missionary Baptist Church in Watts, Los Angeles, recording what would become her best-selling album, "Amazing Grace." Listening to this album since I was 4 years old. I am now 55 years old.Getting my hair streghtened on Saturday night for church on Sunday. "Oh what needless pain we bare because we do not carry everything to God in pryaer." I was 19 years old when I understood that phrase in the song. My sister was addicted to drugs and I thought I had to fix it as her baby sister. Then one day I said the line out loud "oh...........just because we do not carry everything to the lord in prayer." I gave my sister to God. And my sister was drug free months later! Thanks Aretha.

It was the best selling most sold gospel album for decades. Until Ironicly it was surpassed by another Franklin years later.....Kirk Franklin and Friend/Family CD. It was the blueprint to gospel sound of that day. It was sound of Gods amazing grace in CL Franklins daughter. She made the foundation record couple of those songs when she was 15 playing piano...... who is that child with voice strong as mule,Lil Mrs Aretha Franklin.
Almost 20 mins of "Never Grow Old" that made you shake in disbelief. She just opened up took flight and soared. Unbelievable

モダン・ジャズ・シーンの帝王、マイルス・デイヴィス。1947年のソロ・デビュー以来、時代の先端をいく新しいジャズ・ミュージックを創造し続け、かつ数多くの若手ミュージシャンを育成&デビューさせるなどジャズ・シーンを牽引し、没後も様々なジャンルのミュージシャンに影響を与え、大きなリスペクトを受けているジャズ・ミュージシャンである。
そんなマイルス・デイヴィスの貴重なライヴ・アーカイヴが遂にリリース!1964年の初来日公演以来9年振りとなる1973年の来日公演では新たに参加したデイヴ・リーブマンをフィーチュアしたエレクトリック・マイルス・サウンドを初披露。それは正にファンク・ロックとも言えるもので進化し続けるマイルス・デイヴィスはオーディエンスを圧倒する。その熱き演奏は今聞いても新鮮で時代を超越したマイルス・サウンドを体験できる、貴重な記録です。
Miles Davis, the king of the modern jazz scene, has continued to create new jazz music at the forefront of the times since his solo debut in 1947, and has led the jazz scene by nurturing and debuting many young musicians. Even after his death, Miles Davis has influenced many musicians in various genres and is greatly respected as a jazz musician.
In 1973, the first time in 9 years since his first visit to Japan in 1964, Miles Davis performed for the first time the electric Miles sound featuring Dave Liebman, who had joined the band for the first time. The audience was overwhelmed by the ever-evolving Miles Davis sound, which could truly be described as funk-rock. The passionate performance is still fresh even today, and is a valuable record that allows you to experience the timeless Miles sound.

比較されるだけある細さと(身長的にしょうがないかもしれないが)肩幅の狭さからなのか、この動画を見るだけで伝わる肩を丸めるようなドリブルフォームなのに、そこからは想像できないスコアリング能力があるってすごい。

タフショットを高確率で決めれることや、高身長ながら高レベルなボールハンドリングなど今でさえ武器が多過ぎるため、この先の成長が楽しみ。
NBAに入って同じチームメイトのレベルが高くなった時の対応が見所ですね。

シモンズのディフェンスはヤングも凄い嫌がってたしそこまで守れる選手は貴重で凄いので、個人的にはシモンズもエンビートも維持してリング掴んで欲しいですが…環境変わらないとメンタル進化とか難しいのかな〜っとも思ってしまう😭

推しチームのバックスに去年感じたことが
各チームに起きて、今年のバックスには見られなかった
ネッツ→大事な場面でのスター選手の怪我
76ers→負けているのにベンチメンバーの起用
去年味わっていてよかった、おかげで優勝に一番近いと思う
失敗を重ねて、バックスが成長できているので76ersにはこのままのメンバーで再挑戦してほしい

シモンズのプレーが敗因の大きな原因であるけど、今のチームは NBA最高チームの一つであることは間違いないと思う。
チーム解体することなく、シモンズには徹底的にシュート練習させるのが一番だと思う。ただ、シモンズがシュート練習を拒否するようであれば、
トレードするしかないだろう。

シモンズのポテンシャルに対する期待感は、まだ捨てられない。ポテンシャルだけなら、リーグでベストになれるものを持ってると思う。
シモンズが責を問われるのは、チーム内の位置付けを考えれば当然だとは思う。

Everyone in attendance at Safeco Field (and watching at home) knew history was in the making. As the teams took the field, starting shortstop Alex Rodriguez very publicly gestured to Ripken to move over to his original position at short, motioning that he, Alex, would play third base (foreshadowing his switch with the Yankees some years later). As the crowd cheered them on, Cal, slightly embarrassed, agreed to the switch. In the third inning, as Ripken strode to the plate to the theme from "The Natural," the fans gave Cal one of the longest standing ovations ever. Minutes later, post-ovation, Cal stepped into the batters box swung at the first pitch from Chan Ho Park amid a sea of flashbulbs, and it sailed over the left field wall. Another heartfelt tribute from the fans ushered him around the bases. Prior to the sixth inning, Commissioner Bud Selig presented Ripken and Tony Gwynn, who was also retiring after the season, with the Commissioners' Historic Achievement Award. The award, which was created in 1998, is presented at the commissioner's discretion to any player whose body of work is in itself historical or any player who sets a record of historical significance. And the first November Postseason series.. Surely it was one of the most dramatic and interesting years of MLB. ^^ Pujols and Ichiro as two of the best MLB legends became the rookie of the year for each league that year.. Thats insane.. ^^

Just finished (re)watching the 1999 ASG and now watching this one, which stands out to me so much. I grew up in Seattle. It’s hard to believe this was 21 years ago. When I hear these names it’s like no time passed. Such nostalgia.

This was the first All-Star Game that I actually got to watch from start to end and I remember as Cal stepped to the plate in the 3rd Inning and I said to myself, "It would be so cool if he hits a homerun right now", and sure enough he did. Cal was a class act and I am so glad that I was able to see his final All-Star Game Appearance. It's memories like this that make this game so special to me.

WHAT A HISTORIC AT BAT WE WITNESSED IN THE 1ST INNING! The pitcher with the most Cy Young Awards in history (7) faced the batter with the most MVP's in history (7) who also happens to be the home run king! And in 2001, Bonds set the MLB single season home run record with 73! While Clemens became the 1st pitcher in MLB history that season to start a season 20-1! THIS. WAS. HISTORIC!!!!!!!!!!!

"The Introduction by MLB Vaultさん"という気はしますが、あのですね、俺がロジャークレメンスさんの投球を意識して見たのはここでのMLB Vaultさんの"The Introduction"やイチローさんのプレー映像集(ありましたよね？・笑)だけですが、で、それのみを基にした印象批評ですが、あのですね、クレメンスさんの投球は、剛速球で打者を無理やりねじ伏せるというより(投げれるでしょうけど・笑)、投球の微妙なニュアンスの違いで打ち取る(三振に取る)、一貫して純文学の様な投法(笑)、に、俺には見えるのですが、その微妙なニュアンスが出せなくなったから薬に頼って筋肉を、てな感じでもないですし、そもそもですが(笑)。

西武百貨店とパルコ、そして三越が見えました。
ヘリコプターは北側に回り込みます。
手前がパルコ。この1年半前に開店したばかりです。
それまでは「丸物（まるぶつ）」というデパートでした。
こちらが西武百貨店。
屋上がいろいろにぎやかです。
画面手前の屋根が、西武池袋線の駅です。
見えてきた道路が明治通りです。
4車線の大きな道ですが、狭く見えますね。
もう一度、西武です。
遊戯施設、ステージなどが所狭しと並んでいます。
西武百貨店はこのあと西武線ホームの上などに増築が進みます。
その向こうには国鉄のホームも見えます。
国鉄の向こう側は、西口の東武東上線の駅と東武百貨店です。こちらも工事中です。
国鉄の池袋駅です。
ホームは2面で左側には貨物列車がたくさん入っています。貨物の扱いもあったのです。
西口側の東武百貨店です。
じつは、1964年まで西口には東急系の東横百貨店もあったのですが閉店、工事しているのは元々東横だった部分のようです。
池袋には5つのデパートがひしめいていた時代があったのです。
画面の上のほうに、山手線と赤羽線、今の埼京線が分岐する部分が見えます。
西口です。画面奥のガランとした場所にこの8年前まで東京学芸大学附属豊島小学校もありました。
今は東京芸術劇場があります。
ヘリコプターは駅を離れて西へ飛びます。
立教大学が見えてきました。
1874年、明治7年創立のキリスト教系の学校で、
1918年、大正7年に築地から移転してきました。
大学の校舎やグラウンドに挟まれて画面手前よりに見えたのが、
推理小説家の江戸川乱歩が住んでいた家です。
今は、立教大学の大衆文化研究センターになっています。
こちらが、立教の中学と高校です。小学校も隣りにあります。
大学構内に戸建ての建物「校宅」が4つ並んでいます。
3つは立派な西洋館ですが、今はいちばん奥の1棟を残すのみです。
画面左側に立教小学校を見ながら、西洋館の向こう側の「鈴懸の径」沿いに進みます。
ツタで有名な本館が見えてきました。ですが、あまりはっきりしません。
春まだ浅い時期の撮影だからでしょうか。
本館の右奥がチャペルです。
本館をこちら側から見ると、どうやらツタが生えているようにも見えます。
秋から冬にかけて葉を落とすナツヅタと一年中緑のキヅタの2種類があるそうです。
今年、2022年の復活祭イースターは4月17日でした。

中山さんが訪れた小京都は岡山・倉敷。江戸時代は幕府の直轄地「天領」として賑わい、明治以降は、紡績業で栄えた町。美観地区には、昔の建物や町並みが保存されており、白壁の土蔵が建ち並ぶ光景は、江戸時代の情緒が感じられます。また、「繊維の町」とも呼ばれる倉敷は、昔から伝わる伝統技術が様々な発展を遂げています。今回中山さんは、ゲストに番組ナレーターの小島奈津子さんを迎え、風情ある倉敷の町を歩きながら、進化する伝統技術を探ります。もちろん、倉敷ならではの絶品グルメもとことん満喫する2時間拡大版です！
出発地点は、倉敷の町を見下ろす高台にある阿智神社。ここで、倉敷一帯が昔は小さな島々だったことを知り、中山さん、小島さんとも興味津々！そして、倉敷観光の中心地、美観地区に入ると、倉敷川を挟んで土蔵が建ち並ぶ風情ある景色に大感動。まるで江戸時代にタイムスリップしたかのような錯覚に陥ります。甘い香りにつられて立ち寄った老舗和菓子店では、倉敷の銘菓「むらすずめ」をいただきます。薄い皮生地と粒あんのしっとりした食感と、優しい甘さが後をひく美味しさに、二人とも思わず笑みが溢れます。また、数々の蔵にある店舗では、現代風にアレンジした、いぐさ、畳製品や足袋製品を見て回り、伝統技術の進化と、受け継がれてきた高い技術に感銘を受けます。昼食は、地元の人に愛されている「揚げないトンカツ」と、新鮮な魚介を使った「ばら寿司」などをそれぞれ堪能！倉敷ならではの絶品料理に大満足です。さらに、名産のフルーツをふんだんに使ったパフェや、昔懐かしいクリームソーダなど、倉敷グルメを存分に満喫します！地元の方々と触れ合いながら、歴史が息づく倉敷の町を歩きました。
