endorsement

After concluding the alliance with Satsuma、Katsura asked Sakamoto for an "endorsement" to the alliance deed on the Choshu side.

"The terms of this alliance are never false."
I don't know how much value it had、but in his personal capacity、Sakamoto ended up writing a text guaranteeing the Choshu-Satsuma alliance document.

Naturally、the situation surrounding Choshu was unpredictable、so Katsura returned to Choshu immediately after the alliance was concluded.
※Of course、I think someone from the Choshu clan remained at the Satsuma clan residence to negotiate the details of the alliance.

Sakamoto also returned to his habitual lodging in Kyoto、the inn Teradaya in Fushimi.
There he was attacked by Tokugawa shogunate officials (needless to say、this attack was a police activity from the Tokugawa Shogunate's perspective).

Rumors were already circulating that Choshu and Satsuma were secretly meeting in Kyoto.
However、they could not interfere with the Satsuma clan.
So they tried to arrest Sakamoto in order to understand the whole situation.

Sakamoto and his friends were attacked by dozens of members of the shogunate's police force、but they managed to escape (at this time he injured his hand) and were eventually sheltered in the Satsuma clan residence in Kyoto.
※A Choshu samurai was guarding him (according to my memory、he was an expert with the spear).

・・・・・・・・・

By the way、Sakamoto had a handgun given to him by Takasugi.
And at this time、he fired his pistol at a Tokugawa official.

A short time later、he was assassinated.
This assassination is、of course、said to have been carried out by the Tokugawa shogunate.

And this is also a topic a little later than this period.
"The Tokugawa shogun should join us in the new government."
In the end、Sakamoto came to this conclusion.
※Although Sakamoto himself refused to take up any position in the new government.

"Sakamoto may be trying to betray us and deny us the revolution we are trying to accomplish."
In other words、his comrades also had a motive for assassinating him.
Therefore、there is a famous theory that "Sakamoto's assassination was carried out by the Satsuma clan".
※This assassination took place shortly before the start of the decisive armed battle with the Tokugawa Shogunate.
Around that time、Sakamoto's existence and achievements could not be ignored when deciding on the new government's policies. ※

However、from the perspective of the Tokugawa shogunate after the Teradaya Incident、Sakamoto was a criminal law offender.
(Sakamoto shot and killed one shogunate official.)
In other words、there was a reason why the Tokugawa shogunate tried to kill him based on the criminal law of the time.
※It may be "in the extreme circumstances of turbulent times".

※"Sakamoto、the hero (豪侠) of Tosa、leads 5,000 ronin to Kyoto."
Just before his assassination、there seemed to be such rumors around Kyoto.
(This is likely due to the possibility that Sakamoto's Ezo reclamation plan was misrepresented.
After Japan became peaceful、he had a plan to take many ronin with him and develop what is now Hokkaido - of course this would also include the meaning of tondenhei.)
Therefore、the Tokugawa shogunate decided to assassinate Sakamoto.
There seems to be such a theory.

If we change the "target"、this theory may be correct in all respects (including Sakamoto's visit to Kyoto with his soldiers) except for the successful assassination.※

※I think this is from the afterword of Shiba san's final volume where 『Ryoma ga Yuku (Ryoma goes)』. 2023112718:46(japan time).

as an aside

As an aside.
After a successful coup within the Choshu clan、Takasugi fled from Choshu with his lover.
This is because their lives were put in danger due to the backlash of their sudden policy change.
※Of course they did it、and the policy remained unchanged.

※As mentioned above、around this time、Inoue was seriously injured in an attack by (presumably) his "comrades"
Of course their policy did not change by it.
(I don't know now、but some people may have been killed).
This is no laughing matter、but they themselves may have been willing targets for "their" assassination.
Of course、the cause of the assassination was not a political problem、but a jealousy problem (in real history).※

"There is nothing interesting about this world、but I try to live in such a world in an interesting way..."

By the way、this is Takasugi's death poem (although I think it is a very inaccurate paraphrase).
※A death poem should originally have a conclusion part、but it seems that this was all that he wrote while in critical condition. 2023112818:01(japan time).

※"It is our hearts that make this world、which is devoid of anything interesting、an interesting and pleasant place to live."
It seems that a Buddhist nun who watched him die added a concluding phrase to his death poem、making it into a poem with this meaning.

"おもしろきこともなき世をおもしろく、住みなすものは心なりけり(俺の記憶頼り)。" 2023112818:11(日本時間)。※

"We have indeed recaptured our Choshu clan.
That's why I want to try something different."

After the successful coup、Takasugi was planning to go to England to study.

・・・・・・・・・

As an aside.
When Sakamoto was attacked by Tokugawa shogunate officials at Teradaya in Fushimi、Sakamoto's lover lived here.
She was the first to notice the siege to arrest Sakamoto and informed Sakamoto、who was on the floor above her、of his crisis (at the time、she was taking a bath on the first floor、so she was naked).
Sakamoto then succeeded in escaping and was eventually taken to the Kyoto Satsuma clan residence for protection、but he was seriously injured in his hands.

I think this was unusual in Japan at the time、but this lover came to the Satsuma clan residence to care for Sakamoto、and they got married.
And I think this was also unusual at the time、the two accompanied Saigo back to Satsuma、and after arriving in Satsuma、they stayed at Saigo's house for a while.

※I think it was a few days' steamship(?) voyage、but I think it was a good time for them to communicate and coordinate their opinions. 2023112818:36(japan time).

※"Would you lend me your husband old underwear (a loincloth)?"
One day、Sakamoto asked Saigo's wife.
"Sakamoto san asked me to do that、so I lent him your old underwear."

"Don't you understand what a stupid thing you did to him!
Lend him new underwear now!"

"When I told my husband about it later、he got very angry.
I have never seen my husband so angry other than that time."
After the Meiji Restoration (after Saigo's death)、such reminiscences of Saigo's wife remain.※

Incidentally、during their stay in Satsuma、the Sakamoto couple traveled throughout the territory.
This trip is also said to be the first honeymoon in Japan.
